Horse in Gargano National Park
Live your experience on horseback in Gargano National Park. Nestled in the heart of the park, in the agricultural area of Manfredonia, A stone’s throw from the magnificent Umbra Forest, and about 13 km from St. John Rotondo and 16 km from Mount Sant’Angelo, the Equestrian Centre offers everyone the opportunity to enjoy the natural, landscape and food and wine wonders of this area. The equestrian center it manages about 20 hectares of parkland, in which it also boasts a farm of horses murgesi, native equine breed, particularly fascinating and reliable.
The entire area of the park, in addition to the typical vegetation and fauna of the area, is rich in historical references related to the rural and pastoral past of the local populations, the presence of signs and structures related to the phenomenon of brigandage in the resurgence period and rangers’ activities. And right in a former ranger barracks is now home to the equestrian center. This prime location, in the most intact heart of the park, offers a wide range of possibilities for activities related to country riding and equestrian tourism.
The National Park:
Horseback riding in Gargano National Park
Thanks to the constant activity of the center, more than 350 transitable horseback routes have been mapped, all within the park. These routes can be carried out with walks of one or more hours, through itinerant horse trekking or daisy. Some of these tracks form “the Gargano Equestrian Ring”, an itinerary that allows you to take a seven-day horseback ride, connecting the four cardinal points of the sand, passing from the beautiful cers of Bosco Quarto, to the wetlands of Lake Salso, from the karst areas of Monte Calvo to the lakes of Lesina and They varano, up to the white beaches of Vieste and Peschici and the lush Umbra Forest.
All activities on horseback in Gargano National Park are aimed at experienced riders but also beginners and “novice” people. Depending on the experience gained, a suitable path is chosen for the rider.
With your own horse or with the horses of the Equestrian Centre, perhaps the farm’s murgesi, you can explore the most fascinating and unspoiled areas of the park. You can cross the whole Umbra Forest (from the Latin umbrosus or shaded), 400 hectares of forest in a succession of beech trees, cedars, oaks, oaks and Mediterranean scrub. Many of these trees are centuries old and show themselves in all their monumental splendor.
You can discover the Fourth Woods, 8,000 hectares covered mostly by colossal cedars, with spectacular columnar drums, and white carpini, or the lunar landscape typical of Mount Calvo, the highest peak of the Gargano massif, with its 1065 meters above sea level. The mountains of the area are characterized by a high number of caves, in which archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic period have been found.
In the valleys of the park you can meet grazing animals, herds of podiatry cows or horses, but also the gargantuan goat, and, in the less frequented areas, gargantuan roe deer, wild boar, the Salt deer and numerous species of birds.
Horseback activities are also possible during the winter period, when it is easy to meet snow. The horses of the center are used to the climate of the place and know perfectly the paths traced.
The ancient transhumance of Gargano
But the experiences on horseback in Gargano National Park do not end there. Gargano is historically a place of transhumance,in this area transited the cattle that from Abruzzo reached up to the Table of The Puglie. Even today there are many local events that inspire and enhance this ancient tradition of pastoral culture.
And the Equestrian Centre also offers the opportunity to experience a small transhumance. Every year, in the spring to the beginning of autumn, a herd of 40 horsesis moved to the wild, from the plains to the mountains and vice versa, and those who want can participate in this experience together with the knights of the center. From three to five days in contact with nature and a herd of horses in the wild, discovering the traditions and flavors typical of this beautiful land that is Gargano.
And finally here we are talking about the hospitality reserved for enthusiasts. During the daisy treks, on some day trips or for those who want to take a multi-day holiday, hospitality is also guaranteed by Casa Natura, located in Bosco Quarto in the beating heart of the park, a stop and rest point for those who want to live the beauty of this land to the full.
It is one of the structures connected to Legambiente Tourism, with the aim of ensuring a management with respect for the environment and in harmony with the surrounding nature.
